I wake in WEST AUSTRALIA!! I've always wanted to come here! Not much to see at Eucla, so I continue west. I asked the girl at the service station if there was any nearby beach access as I wanted to get a shot of the sun coming up over the beach. That wasn't going to happen due to the 100% cloud cover...
PS... I made a mistake yesterday, Bordertown isn't Bordertown, it's Border village. BUT that doesn't matter cos it still isn't either!!
Animal warning signs all along the road... At the other end of the Nullabor I saw a dead camel on the side of the road, wouldn't want to hit one of those!!
So I follow the directions given to get to the beach and can tell I'm getting close as it's getting sandier. Then I'm driving on sand and my years of driving on sand brain is saying stop here cos your car won't make it up that next little hill, but my other brain is saying give it a go.... So I got bogged in the sand!!
I wandered about for about 20 minutes and found all the necessary tools required to get myself out. That's the good thing about humanity, they always leave enough rubbish about the country that you can fix your car, get it out of a pickle, and even build a shelter! It's amazing to consider whre I am right now, approximately 4 km from the highway, on an un-named track, one of many, in the scrub, at least 500Km from the nearest town of more than 20 people, and STILL I can't walk 5 metres without seeing some form of human rubbish just thrown out in the scrub! If you read this, and you travel anywhere, keep your rubbish in your car ok!! I found 20 M of large rope, which would have been enough if I'd had a winch, didn't find one of them. Two large sheets of roofing iron, some rusty iron, and a piece of exhaust pipe as well as hundreds of bottles and cans.
So I jacked up one side of the car, filled in the hole under the wheel, dug some sand out from under the car, and put a sheet of iron under the wheel. NEVER place an arm or leg under a vehicle to dig under it. That's how people die in the bush, the car could fall on your appendage and your trapped. What do you do then? get eaten by a dingo!!
I did the same on the other side and reversed back to solid ground.
You can see the sand flattened where the car stopped!
My shovel!
My ramps!
Finally I walked the remainder to the beach! This is looking East along the Great Australian Bight. If you have a four wheel drive you can drive 180Km in that direction....
And looking West... you can drive another 200Km in that direction. Which is all well and good but you can't get back to the highway....
It was amazing standing there alone seeing such beautiful beach that is completely unspoilt by the hoards of people driving on the beaches of SE Qld!
From Eucla there was this ridge running parallel to the highway for the next 200Km, which continued who knows how much further once the highway went up on top of it. Driving along on the oceanic flatland with nothing from the ocean to this ridge, which is about 200 feet tall, I was just thinking wouldn't it be cool to come here when there's a nice strong southerly wind blowing and hang glide all the way along this ridge from one end to the other.........
All the way along the Eyre highway across the Nullabor there were these spots for the RFDS to land.
Complete with runway end markers!!
The view from the top of the ridge at the Mundrabilla roadhouse.
Several times I saw wedge tailed eagles feasting on roadkill. This was the only occasion I was able to get a few pictures of these spectacular birds.
These next photos give you some perspective of the eagles size. That is a garden variety roadside marker post with an average standard size crow sitting atop it...
Cocklebiddy roadhouse, I had lunch here.
Self explanatory, I set my odometer the 0 and checked it and it was exactly as stated which means the odometer in my car must read correctly!
Half way along the strait road
Then finally............
Oh look..... a corner!!!!!!!!
Lake Cowan at Norseman
Not an attractive town, but a town none the less and the first actual town since leaving Ceduna, 1198Km.
About 50Km from Norseman heading towards Esperance I came across the remains of a train crash, what a mess.
The region of the WA wheat belt has a town called Grass Patch. So far they don't seem to have the emphasis on town signs like NSW, Vic and QLD. But this one made up for it!
I slummed it in a flash motel on the water front at Esperence and this is the view from my window....
Today I'm going to do what I came here to do... explore the south west coast!!!
911Km

Hey Tim,
ReplyDeleteWoohoo. Found your blog.... and loving it! Just next time you do a trip like this..... give me some warning.... I'll travel with you.... although I can't promise to do the 28+ kms of hiking bit. But then again, might even manage that if the photography is worth the effort, and judging by your photos...... I wouldn't be wanting to miss any of it!!!
Keep it coming! Loving it.
It was GREAT to catch up over a long and lazy brunch when you were in Melbourne.
Stay safe!
